Pear Wood Canister

I had this small piece of Pear wood with cracks in it and a bark inclusion, and weird grain going in all directions. Can I even make something out of this? I'm a bit surprised it came out as good as it did. I got the grain to line up with the lid. I hollowed out the interior with a Forstner bit and finished the inside bottom with a spindle gouge. I pulled the bark out of that little cavity because it was coming apart as I turned this thing. Fortunately, that cavity had a textured black lining, so it looks even better than I planned. There's also a small natural hole in the side, which doesn't go through the wall of the canister. I left it as is. I added beads to the top and bottom edges of the lid and the bottom. I formed a short faux knob on the lid top. There's also a textured rosette on the slightly concave bottom. This box was finished as per usual, wet sanding, etc.. Finished finally with Museum wax and buffed. The grain on this is amazing.

Another Pear Wood Bowl

Click on image to see a larger version.
This Pear wood bowl measures 6.5 inches in diameter and 3 inches high. This one has rounded sides and includes a couple of small knots. The grain is a little nicer than the last Pear bowl I posted. The finish treatment was as usual: mineral oil wet sanded up to 400 grit, then high-speed burnished with its own shavings. I added a center texturing detailing on the outside bottom of the bowl. That black spot you see in the detail ring is a knot. You can see the other end of the knot on the photo of the inside of the bowl.

Pear Wood Bowl

I made a nice 7 inch diameter bowl, 3.25 inches high from a Pear wood log section. The sides on this bowl are nearly straight vertically. There was a bit of bark still attached at the edge of the base, but it fell off. I left that spot as is. I did some texturing detail at the center of the bottom. For this I used a home made, by me, texturing tool. It involves rotary carbide burr Dremel bits set in bearings at the end of a tube, with a handle on the other end. Hold this tool, at different angles, against a rapidly spinning piece of wood to make interesting rosettes. The rings were cut with the tip of a parting tool. This wood is a dream to turn. Cuts nicely and finishes beautifully. As usual I wet sanded with mineral oil up to 400 grit. This bowl feels like satin to the touch.

Small Pear Wood Dish

Here's a 4 inch diameter dish, 3/4 of an inch high, made from Pear wood. This wood is a real pleasure to turn. This was wet sanded with mineral oil up to a 400 grit, then burnished with its own shavings. The grain is subtle but beautiful.

I have some larger pieces of this wood from which I plan to make bowls. . . soon.

Spalted Maple Box #2

Here's another spalted Maple box. This one measures 7 inches in diameter and 6.5 inches tall. There's a Walnut wood finial knob on top. A little less spalting on this one allows more of the natural Maple grain to show through. This was turned from a large chunk of Maple I've had in my shop for a couple of years. Nice to finally see what was inside it. As usual, this was mineral oil wet sanded up to 400 grit to a satin finish. There's a textured detail ring under the finial knob.

Big Spalted Maple Box

Here's a wood turned box made from a big chunk of spalted Maple. It measures 6.5 inches high and 7.5 inches in diameter. There's a walnut wood finial knob. The grain matches nicely from lid to base. There's a texture detail ring on the bottom. As usual this was wet sanded with mineral oil up to 400 grit. Incredible spalting on this, and there's some nice natural maple grain showing through the spalting.

3 Footed Spalted Maple Canister

Here's a very nicely done spalted Maple canister. It measures 6 inched high by 3.75 inches in diameter. I got the grain to match up nicely between the top and bottom. There's a Walnut wood knob on top. It has a 3 footed base. Wet sanded up to 400 grit with mineral oil.

Small Spalted Maple Canister

Here's another spalted Maple wood canister. This one measures 3.5 inches high by 1.5 inches in diameter. There's a clear glass sphere as a knob, some detail beads and a bark inclusion on the side that looks pretty cool.

Small Walut Wood Canister

Here's a small Walnut wood canister measuring 3 inches high and 1.75 inches in diameter. There's a glass sphere with an amber colored inclusion as a knob. There are a couple of detail rings on the lid as well. This is made from a couple of pieces of scrap wood, so the grain on the top and bottom don't match. There's a texture ring detail on the bottom. As usual, wet sanded with mineral oil.

Walnut Wood Canister

This is a Walnut wood canister measuring 4 high by 2 inches in diameter. Wet sanded with mineral oil up to a 400 grit gives it a satin finish. I formed a bead at the base, and a texture ring near the rim of the lid. Also a texture ring on the bottom. There's a slightly amber glass sphere as a knob at the top. The canister has a slight taper from top to bottom.

Spalted Maple Canister

Here's a nice spalted Maple canister. It measures 2 inches in diameter and 4.25 inches high. The grain matches nicely between the lid and the canister. A bead was formed at the base of the canister and the rim of the lid. There's a glass sphere as a knob at the top. Wet sanded with mineral oil up to a grit of 400 gives this piece a beautiful satin finish, which actually feels like satin to the touch.

Walnut Shot Glass

I turned a Walnut wood shot glass, just for jollies. Did a little texture ring on the bottom.

Spalted Maple and Walnut Bowl

Here's a spalted Maple and Walnut wood bowl. Made up of a stack of 12-segmented rings. It measures 5.25 inches in diameter and 2.5 inches high. Wet sanded with mineral oil up to a grit of 400. Also added a textured ring detail on the bottom outside made with a home made (by me) texturing tool.
