Small Spalted Maple Wood Bowl

Here's a 4.25 inch diameter, 2.25 inch tall spalted Maple wood bowl. Light spalting on this one. Interesting "mackeral" pattern in some of the wood (most visible on rim). Also some nice chatoyance in the grain in a couple of places. "Chatoyance" is the glistening 3D looking grain one sees as the object is turned in the light. No beading or texturing on this one. This was wet sanded with mineral oil up to 400 grit, then oiled with orange oil. This gives the wood a very pleasant satin feel to the touch.

Eucalyptus Wood Bowl

This is a 5.5 inch diameter, 2.5 inch high Eucalyptus wood bowl. This wood was cut a couple of years ago so it was very dry and consequentially very hard. I mean freakin' rock hard! Good sharp tools got the job done though. This was wet sanded with mineral oil up to 400 grit and finished with orange oil. There's a textured rim slanting in opposite directions, and a small bead at the base rim. Also texturing on the bottom center. The color of this wood is interesting. I love that reddish tinted wood.

Small Pear Wood Box

I had some small pieces of Pear wood lying about and wondered if I could turn something on my lathe with them. The wood had lots of cracks and inclusions so I wasn't sure if I could actually make something with them. This was made from 3 small pieces of wood. The bottom 2 parts were from the same section of a branch, the finial was from a different part of the same tree. The base is 2.5 inches in diameter and just over one inch tall, with an undercut interior. The outside has a couple of beads and a textured center band done with a Sorby texturing tool. The bottom part of the lid is from the same piece of wood, both of which have a bark inclusion. The top has a couple of beads cut into it. The finial is from a different Pear branch. The design isn't all that great as a composition but it's too good to just throw it away.

Maple Wood Bowl

This is a 6.5 inch diameter Maple wood bowl, about 3 inches high. No spalting on this one. A lovely piece of Maple wood, wet sanded with orange oil up to about 400 grit. Feels like satin to the touch. I did some texturing under the rim  and near the bottom, and also in the center underneath the bowl. I'm sending this one to one of my sisters for her birthday.

Small Maple Bowl

This is a small spalted Maple bowl (3 inch diameter, 1 inch high) made from a scrap of this wood. These small items are good for practicing my tool technique. This one's a keeper. Came out very nice.

Small Plum Wood Bowl

Here's a small Plum wood bowl, measuring about 2.5 inches in diameter and 1.75 inches high. The black, burnt looking parts of the rim are bits of bark still attached. This was wet sanded up to 320 grit with mineral oil. No finish was added to this. The texturing pattern on the bottom was done with a Sorby texturing tool.
