Another Green-Turned Elm Wood Bowl

Here's a 5 inch diameter by 1.5 inch high green-turned Elm wood bowl. This one has no sap wood on it. All heart wood, with knot inclusions. This is another wet turned bowl from a storm damaged tree in my yard. This is starting to warp as it dries. I'm hoping that it won't crack. We'll see in a few weeks. Letting it dry slowly and naturally might get me better results. This was wet sanded with mineral oil up to 320 grit, then orange oil treated, sanded. Will sand again an polish once it's dried completely.

Green-Turned Elm Wood Bowl

This is a 5.75 inch diameter by 2 inch high green-turned Elm wood bowl. This was put on the lathe about 4-5 days after a storm dropped this big branch in my yard. I got a nice chunk of heart wood from that and turned this from it. The heart wood is beautiful in this wood. It has little red colored knots throughout it and a little bit of red coloring between the sap wood and the heart wood. Beautiful grain. This is still drying and I expect it to warp and it might crack too. We'll have to wait and see. I've never turned this kind of wood before. No telling how the green wood will dry out.

Small Plum Wood Canister

This small canister was made from a scrap of Plum wood. It measures 4.5 inches tall and 1 inch in diameter. I topped it with a green glass marble. The black dished-out section on the side is where there was a bark inclusion, which fell out while I was turning it. The top doesn't fit as snuggly as I'd like.  It was quick wet sanded up to 320 grit and treated with orange oil.

Small Pear Wood Canister

Here's a small Pear wood canister I turned. It measures 2.5 inches tall and 1.25 inches in diameter. I used my Sorby texturing tool to make the decorative lines on the top. This was wet sanded with mineral oil up to 320 grit sandpaper. I love working with this wood. This piece has a couple of small cracks that appeared a week after it was finished.

Small Elm Wood Bowl

This is another small Elm wood bowl turned from green wood (very wet). This one measures about 4 inches in diameter and about 1.5 inches high. The darker wood is the heart wood. This was very green (wet) wood and here the bowl is about a week after it was turned and is now dry. It has shrunken and warped. Wood shrinks according to the grain, so it comes out elliptical in shape, shrinking more in one direction than the other. This was wet sanded with mineral oil, then air dried. After that is was sanded again, then oiled with Orange oil, then sanded with MicroMesh 2400 grit sandpaper.

Small Elm Wood Dish

This was an experiment in turning green wood. This is a small piece of Elm wood from a big branch knocked down in a wind storm. This soaking wet  piece of wood was put on the lathe the same day the branch came down, hence the crazy warpage seen here. It is no longer round or flat but has a certain interesting charm to it in spite of that. I will try turning some larger pieces of this wood.

Small Elm Wood Cup

This is a small Elm wood cup measuring about 2 inches high and about 1.5 inches in diameter. This is finished by wet sanding with Orange Oil and Carnuba wax. The darker wood is the heart wood. This is from another tree branch that broke off in a wind storm.

Small Spalted Maple Bowl

This is a small spalted Maple wood bowl measuring about 2.5 inches in diameter and about an inch high. I do small stuff like this just to keep in practice and develop skills and techniques. Here are some more photos of this bowl.
