Large Segmented Bowl

This is the largest bowl I've made so far. It measures 4.25 inches high and 8.50 inches in diameter. From top to bottom the woods used are: Maple, thin ply plywood (mahogany?), Mahogany, Cherry and Oak on the bottom. Each layer except the base is a segmented ring. I like the effect of the vertically oriented plywood layers, creating the loop pattern. I wish I'd used another thin band of red Mahogany on the rim instead of the Maple. Not bad though for something made out of scrap wood.

Small Segmented bowl

This is my second attempt at a segmented bowl. This bowl measures 2.5 inches high and 3.5 inches in diameter. It's made from some kind of thin ply 2 inch thick plywood (mahogany?) in an eight segment arrangement. It is set in the vertical orientation and that's what creates the draped loop effect. Very cool. There's a thinner, 1/2" thick plywood on the base. The rim is a different kind of mahogany. The finish is high-speed wax.

Small Walnut bowl

Here's a small Walnut wood bowl turned on my lathe. The dimensions are: 4.5 inches in diameter and 1.25 inches high. The black spot in the center right is a knot. This piece of wood is a scrap cut-off from the outside area of the log, so the inside of the bowl (darker wood) is from deeper in the log and the rim of the bowl (lighter colored wood) is from near the outside of the log. Walnut wood is a real pleasure to turn and it smells good and finishes nicely. I cut some rings on the under side of the bowl and I left a "foot" rim on the bottom as well.

Small Round Mahogany Box

This is a light colored Mahogany box. It measures 3.5 inches in diameter and 4 inches tall. The knob is a darker Mahogany. The lid has a snug friction fit. The finish is a high-speed wax. This thing shines like a jewel; like a tigers-eye effect.

A Small Mahogany Bowl

Here's a small Mahogany bowl made from glued-together scraps. It measures 3 inches in diameter and 1.25 inches high. It is finished with boiled linseed oil and hand-rubbed wax.
